Abdi Nageeye, Sheila Chepkirui Win New York Marathon Top Prizes

Abdi Nageeye of the Netherlands and Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui won the men’s and women’s races at the New York City Marathon on Sunday.

Nageeye finished strongly, surging past Kenyan Evans Chebet, the 2022 champion, in the final stretch to clock 2:07.39. Kenya’s Albert Korir was third.

Chepkirui triumphed in 2:24.35 to claim her first world marathon major win.

She finished 14 seconds clear of 2023 winner Hellen Obiri, with Vivian Cheruiyot completing an all-Kenyan podium.

Britain’s David Weir was second in the men’s wheelchair race, won by American favourite Daniel Romanchuk.

Romanchuk, who was also victorious in 2018 and 2019, finished in one hour 36 minutes 31 seconds – five seconds clear of Weir, with Japan’s Tomoko Suzuki eight seconds further back in third.

Switzerland’s Marcel Hug, the winner of 16 straight marathons and bidding for a fourth consecutive victory in New York, was fourth.

Susannah Scaroni won the women’s wheelchair race for the second time, finishing more than 10 minutes clear of fellow American and five-time champion Tatyana McFadden. Switzerland’s Manuela Schar was third.
