Renowned for her witty personality, charm, and talent, dancehall diva Denyque has been captivating fans since her début on the music scene in 2009. Establishing herself early on with hits like Summer Love, How to Rave, and Make Me Believe You, and continuing her success with her latest EP R.E.A.D.Y and mixtape S.E.T, Denyque has proven that she’s here to stay. Beyond her musical prowess, she proudly embraces motherhood, raising two adorable and talented children, Connor and Dylann Mullings. With Mother’s Day just two days away, The Gleaner had the opportunity to chat with her about her journey as a mom and how she balances musical artistry with motherhood, in Five Questions.
1. Did you always want to be a mother growing up?
I sure did. I always knew that I wanted to be a mother. However, during my late teens into early 20s, the feeling wavered a bit. But it never went away.

2. What surprised you during your first year of motherhood?
The first year of motherhood was exciting and interesting. I think the most surprising thing about that time period was the fact that I could operate as a zombie with those sleepless nights and still pour so much love into my little human.
3. How do you balance a music career and being a mom?
It is never easy balancing music and motherhood, but I prioritise as best as I can. There are times where nothing comes before me and my children, and there are other times where I lean on my little village. I’m so grateful for that love and support.
4.Share with us some of your favourite songs to sing with or to your children.
When it comes to singing time, Baby Shark is our number one track, for sure. Then there’s a song by 98 Degrees that I sing to them a lot, called Because of You. They love it. Besides that, they teach me the new songs that they learn every other day. I can’t keep up, but we love to sing.
5. What’s something from your own upbringing that you’ve carried into raising your children?
Among the knowledge of wisdom imparted by my parents that has stood out to me was the importance of setting a solid foundation where manners, morals, principles and gratitude are concerned.

Have your children ever surprised you with their talent or creativity? And, in what way?
Absolutely! So Connor can actually sing. Well, they both can, because Dylann’s voice is great and she knows the songs word for word. But, with Connor, when he’s ready to hold my hand and sing –man! Incredible! He’s shy, though. Dylann is a visual artist. She can draw really well. She surprises me with some new drawings from her imagination every time.
