Residents of Watt Town in St. Ann are benefiting from the establishment a $30-million multipurpose facility that provides information technology, postal and bill payment services, and space for community activities.

The building, which was officially opened on Friday (June 14), involves collaboration among the Tourism Product Development Company Limited (TPDCo), Jamaica Bauxite Institute (JBI) and Universal Service Fund (USF).

It is situated on property that previously housed the community post office.

Executive Director of TPDCo, Wade Mars, said the facility, which includes a fully furnished computer room, was constructed through robust partnership.

“This multipurpose facility is designed to serve education, communication and community activities. It will offer resources and opportunities that are essential for personal and community growth. This project is tangible proof of what we can achieve through collaboration and partnership,” he said.

He noted that the establishment of the building is in keeping with TPDCo’s mandate to improve infrastructure for the benefit of citizens.

“Our mandate is to improve infrastructure throughout the country to be enjoyed by locals, and if tourists do come here, they are able to enjoy it as well [but] what we develop is for our people,” he pointed out.

For his part, Member of Parliament of St. Ann South Western, Hon. Zavia Mayne, said he is pleased about the project, noting that it will improve the lives of residents, particularly children.

He noted that the students will be able to access free Wi-Fi to do their schoolwork.

“I feel good and I know Watt Town and its environs, you feel good too because you are seeing the Government working for you… . This [project] is important for us. We welcome it, we cherish it and we say thanks to all our partners, ” said Mr. Mayne, who is also Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and the Public Service.
